Periodontitis, or gum disease, poses a major threat to your oral health. In addition to causing symptoms like tooth sensitivity and bad breath, periodontitis can eventually lead to tooth loss. So, seeking prompt treatment for gum disease is crucial to regain your oral health and prevent permanent damage.

Periodontal therapy can regenerate the oral health of patients with gum disease. Learn more about this effective treatment option below:

How Laser Gum Treatment Removes Plaque and Tartar

With periodontal laser therapy, we can remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line—the bacteria in plaque and tartar cause gum irritation. Over time, this irritation can escalate and become gum disease.

We remove the inflamed gum tissue around the tooth’s root in periodontal laser therapy. This allows us to perform root scaling, a procedure in which the plaque and tartar beneath the gum line are removed. Once the plaque and tartar are taken away, the infected gum tissue can heal. In contrast to traditional surgical methods, laser periodontal therapy is significantly less painful, more precise, and allows for a much shorter recovery period.

Laser Gum Treatment Can Restore a Receding Gum Line

Gum grafting can regenerate the oral health of patients experiencing gum recession due to gum disease. The inflammation of the gums caused by periodontitis can cause the gums to recede. Gum recession then creates larger pockets and gaps between the teeth and the gum line, where bacteria can accumulate. This exacerbates the issue and further deteriorates the patient’s oral health.

In gum grafting, a small portion of gum tissue is harvested from the roof of the patient’s mouth and then secured to the area of recession. The gum graft can cover exposed tooth roots, ease tooth sensitivity, and reduce the risk of tooth loss.

If you keep up regular dental health maintenance activities like brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once daily, and using mouthwash intermittently, you likely won’t have to deal with any major issues regarding your teeth. However, some dental issues can occur despite regular maintenance based on other health factors, and one of the most common conditions to develop is periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease, also commonly referred to as gingivitis, is an infection that occurs in the structure surrounding the teeth. This includes the gums, the alveolar bone, and the periodontal ligament. The condition is mostly limited to the gums in its early stages but can spread to other nearby areas if left untreated.

How is periodontal disease treated?

Depending on the severity of the case, periodontal disease can be treated in several ways, which includes both surgical and non-surgical options. These treatments are often referred to as periodontal therapies and can help to return your gums to full health over time.

Many less severe cases can have success with non-surgical approaches such as bite adjustment, night guards, a deep cleaning of the gums, and localized antibiotic treatment. Some of the surgical options for more severe cases include dental implants, surgical reduction of the space between teeth and gums, and crown lengthening.

What are the benefits?

Periodontal therapies are extremely common and can have a host of benefits besides the improvement of your periodontal disease symptoms. Plus, most periodontal therapies have very little to no risk involved and can be performed with little downtime needed.

Periodontal therapy can result in teeth whitening, removal of tartar, and improvement of bad breath, which is a common symptom of gingivitis. Additionally, other health problems can be spotted in the periodontal therapy process, which could allow potential issues to be spotted early.
